Top 10 Things to See in Varaždin

If you’re traveling through northern Croatia, Varaždin is a must-see gem! Known as the “Baroque capital of Croatia”, this charming city offers a mix of history, art, music, and delicious local food — all wrapped up in cozy, colorful streets.

Here are the top 10 things you shouldn’t miss when visiting Varaždin:

1. Explore the Stari Grad Castle (Old Town)

Stari Grad Castle has a rich history — it was once a noble estate, a military fortress, and a Renaissance Wasserburg. Since 1925, it has been home to the City Museum, showcasing Varaždin’s fascinating past.

But the castle isn’t just for history lovers. Its impressive watchtower, green lawns, and former bastions make it a favorite spot for locals and visitors alike. People stroll, relax, fall in love, or simply enjoy the view.

All year round, the castle is alive with activity: summer concerts and plays, a winter ice rink, and even a toboggan run. Stari Grad Castle isn’t just a landmark — it’s the living heart of Varaždin.

2. Main Square and City Hall

The main square is officially named after King Tomislav, but locals simply call it Korzo. Right in the heart of the historic center, Korzo is surrounded by stunning Baroque palaces and elegant houses, giving it a truly timeless charm.

The square’s centerpiece is the Town Hall, one of Varaždin’s most iconic landmarks alongside Stari Grad Castle. While the castle represents the city’s rich heritage, the elegant bell tower of the Town Hall celebrates over eight centuries of civic freedom. Since the 16th century, the Town Hall has been the hub of the city’s administration — and today it’s still a symbol of Varaždin’s proud history and lively spirit.

Wander through cobblestone streets filled with pastel-colored baroque buildings, charming cafes, and boutique shops. Every corner has a story — and plenty of photo opportunities!
