Varaždin has everything you’d hope to find in continental Croatia — great food, fun festivals, a relaxed vibe, and that special mix of culture and warmth that makes you want to slow down and stay a little longer. Whether you’re wandering through the old town, listening to street music, or just soaking up the atmosphere, Varaždin has a way of making you feel at home.

How to get there from Zagreb?

From Zagreb it’s super easy to reach Varaždin:

1. By bus: There are direct buses from Zagreb’s main bus station (Autobusni kolodvor) to Varaždin that take about 1 h 45 m and cost from around 7–16€.
2. By car: The drive is around 80–85 km and takes roughly 1 hour depending on traffic.
3. By train: It’s possible but much slower (over 3 hours) via a transfer, so bus or car are the better choices. So if you’re staying in Zagreb and want a nice day-trip or weekend escape, Varaždin ticks all the boxes.

On your way there you will enjoy beautiful scenery and landscapes.

Arrive in Varaždin mid-morning and kick things off like the locals do — with coffee. Sit down at one of the cozy cafés near the main square, and just watch the city wake up. People here really know how to enjoy their slow mornings.

After coffee, take a relaxed walk through the Old Town. The star of the show is definitely Varaždin Castle (Stari grad), surrounded by peaceful green lawns and old city walls. It’s one of those fairytale-looking places that makes you want to take a dozen photos from every angle.

Afternoon: Culture and charm

After lunch, take a look into Varaždin’s artsy side. Pop into a museum, explore a few baroque palaces, or simply wander and spot the quirky little details — colorful doors, hidden angel statues, and hand-painted shop signs known as “cimeri.”

If you’re lucky to visit during one of the city’s festivals (like Špancirfest in summer), the streets come alive with music, performers, and market stalls — it’s truly something special.
In the winter time the city becomes one magical Christmas market. With a bunch of lights and decorations, delightful smells and flavours - you will feel like a part of a true Christmas fairytale!
