Opeka Castle - The Sleeping Beauty of Varaždin County

Hidden among centuries-old trees in the peaceful village of Vinica, just a short drive from Varaždin, stands Opeka Castle. A grand yet quietly mysterious reminder of the region’s noble past.

Though time has softened its beauty, the castle still carries a special charm that draws in history lovers, photographers, and dreamers alike.

Built in the 17th century, Opeka Castle was once the elegant residence of the noble Bombelles family, one of the most influential families in northern Croatia. Its Neo-Gothic design, later enriched with Romantic elements, made it one of the most impressive estates in the region. Over the centuries, it hosted aristocrats, travelers, and artists, all captivated by its serene surroundings.

Just beside the castle lies the Opeka Arboretum, one of the oldest and richest botanical gardens in Croatia. It was established by Count Marko Bombelles in the 19th century, who personally collected exotic trees and plants from around the world. Today, the arboretum features more than 150 species of trees and shrubs, making it a perfect escape for a peaceful walk in nature.

Whether you come for a photo walk, a history-filled day trip, or simply a breath of tranquility among ancient oaks, Opeka Castle and Arboretum are a must-see for anyone exploring northern Croatia.
