Alfred Hitchcock and the Famous Zadar Sunset
Zadar has many symbols, but one of them never grows old: the sunset. No matter how many times I watch it, it always strikes me the same way: with the silence that falls over the sea promenade as the sun begins to sink toward the horizon.
It was legendary film director Alfred Hitchcock who once said that the Zadar has the most beautiful sunset in the world. And indeed, when you stand on the sea promenade and look toward the open sea, you realize he was right. That sight when the sea turns into liquid gold, and the sky into a canvas of orange and purple, speaks for itself.
The Magic of Sunset on Zadar’s Sea Promenade
It all starts subtly. The promenade is still noisy, children jump from the stone steps into the sea, tourists buy ice cream, bicycles pass by, someone strums a guitar. The sea glistens, waves crash into the organ pipes, producing that magical, deep sound that seems to rise from the very belly of the ocean. And then, almost imperceptibly, everything slows down.
People pause. Some sit on benches, others right on the edge of the quay. They hold their phones, taking pictures, but slowly lower them, realizing the camera can’t capture what the eyes see. The sky becomes a stage, the sea its audience.
The sunset in Zadar is not just an image; it is an experience. For some, it is a moment of love, for others nostalgia, and for many simply beauty. But it is always shared. When the sun finally touches the sea, it feels as if we are all attending the same premiere performance.
Zadar Attractions by the Sea: Sea Organ and Greeting to the Sun
The magic probably would not be the same without two installations unique in the world: The Sea Organ and the Greeting to the Sun.
The Sea Organ: Music of the Waves
The Sea Organ, designed by architect Nikola Bašić and opened in 2005, consists of broad steps that hide pipes and resonant chambers underneath. The waves create the music, making the sea organ the world’s first instrument played solely by nature (Source: Zadar.hr ↗).
Greeting to the Sun: A Light Show at Night
Right next to it lies the Greeting to the Sun, also Bašić’s work, completed in 2008. This installation of 300 multilayered glass panels arranged in a 22-meter-wide circle absorbs sunlight during the day and turns it into a dazzling light show at night, synchronized with the sounds of the Sea Organ (Source: Zadar.hr ↗).
Don’t Miss the Zadar Sunset Experience
If you come to Zadar, don’t miss this experience. Sit on the sea promenade, listen to the music of the Sea Organ, watch the Greeting to the Sun glow with colors. And when the sun sinks into the sea, let that quiet, shared magic embrace you.
