Subtitled Tuesdays in Cinema Europa
Every tuesday evening tourists in Zagreb have a great chance to see Croatian film (or some other independent contemporary film from all four corners of the world) with English subtitles. Screenings are marked in schedule with a caption Subtitled Tuesday. Cinema Europa, located 400m from Ban Jelačić square, next to Petar Preradović square (Flower square) is Zagreb’s oldest cinema built in 1924./25. by the Müller family.
Due to highlighted cultural, historical and architectural qualities, as one of the oldest urban cinema-theatres, in 2013. Croatian Ministry of culture reached a decision to make Cinema Europa a protected cultural heritage site of the Republic of Croatia. The cinema’s interior and its lavish stucco decorations and post-Art Nouveau classicist details are considered one of the city’s most beautiful spaces. Almost 20 Croatian film festivals and events found home in Cinema Europa including Animafest and Zagreb Film Festival. In regular screenings cinema has children's program, matinees, cult silent film screened with Zagreb Philharmonic Orchestra’s musical accompaniment and other programs. Because all of that Cinema Europa is not just for movie buffs. It's legendary Zagreb cinema where generations and generations of children of '70. and '80. made first cartoon and movie steps with their parents and latter friends. Cinema with soul and smell of real movies. Plus they have nice cafe/grapperia/wine bar (weekend open until 04:00) popular among students and intellectuals.
