Sandals of Mother Teresa in oldest church in the world dedicated to St. Dismas
St. Dismas is Penitent thief also known as the Good thief of the Thief on the Cross. Two men were crucified at the same time as Jesus, one on his right side and one on left.Dismas on the right adressed to Christ and said: „Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom“. Jesus replied to him: „Today you will be with me in paradise“. Since 1706. church at the corner of Nova ves and Zvonarička street in Zagreb is dedicated to St. Dismas, where prisoners waiting for execution at nearby former North gate, could repent themselves just like good thief Dismas.
It is the oldest church in the world dedicated to Penitent thief and opened for public just recently in Advent season last year. Within St. Dismas church you can find unique relic - worn and a little bit broken sandals from Mother Teresa. When Mother Teresa was in Zagreb, just before the Nobel Prize award ceremony in 1979., Croatian Reverend bought her new shoes and the old ones stayed in St.Dismas church in Zagreb. Sandals lay almost forgotten in a glass case hidden from the public eye for decades until the recent re-opening of the church. Now they are in sealed glass box without oxygen and with tiny control device and certificate. So, the sandals of Mother Teresa will remain preserved for centuries. Beside the sandals, the remains of the cross on which Dismas died, are allegedly build in the church altar. Church is open for public on sundays,we recommend visit during sunday Kaptol stroll.
