Only 20 miles away from Zagreb, Gornja Stubica is a common place for weekend picnics. Surrounded by beautiful forests, it can make a great hideaway. The place exists from 13th century but became widely known after big Peasant Rebellion in 16th century. The legend says that the linden tree which still grows in Gornja Stubica was a gathering place for peasants who organized rebellion against nobility. The linden tree (Gupčeva lipa) is now 400 years old and protected as nature monument. Next to the famous tree, you will see the st. Juraj church. On the upper side of Gornja Stubica there is a big bronze monument dedicated to the Peasant Rebellion. Visit Museum of the Rebellion in the castle Orsic, also placed on the top of the hill. This area is well known after pottery, so souvenirs can be bought in a shop near the museum.

Find refreshment in a restaurant next to the linden tree, and eat your meal while sitting on a big wooden bench. Explore the area by foot and find authentic cottages surrounded by vineyards. In the village Gusakovec very close to Gornja Stubica you can taste traditional food in a rural household “Lojzekova hiza” – they offer accommodation too. Do try authentic meals like turkey with pastry, and finish your lunch or supper with cheese strudel and variety of local drinks. You may even ask traditional tamburitza musicians to play the music while you enjoy the meal!

How to Come to Gornja Stubica
You may come to Gornja Stubica by car, train or bus from any Croatian city. If you rent a car, take a side road which is as good as highway, but you need to drive slow. If take a train in Zagreb, you’ll be there in an hour to Gornja Stubica, so if you’re not so romantic for slow drive, take a bus which will take you faster to the destination.
