The Hidden Oasis of Vruljica Park in Zadar
Every tourist visiting Zadar will likely stroll through the Old Town peninsula, the heart of the city, but also the busiest area during high season. If you want to experience Zadar more deeply, away from the crowds, there is a special place worth discovering: Vruljica Park, a green oasis just outside the peninsula.
Here, the shade of tall trees, the gentle flow of the Vruljica stream, and the scents of traditional Dalmatian cuisine from the nearby The Well restaurant create the perfect escape.
For me, Vruljica is a place filled with childhood memories. I remember the first time my parents brought me here; running free, sliding clumsily down the slide, even crying after a small fall. Today, more than 30 years later, the park still holds the same charm: the laughter of children, the rustling leaves, and the ever-present murmur of water.
Since 2023, the first sensory park in Zadar, designed after the most developed inclusive European cities, has opened here. It is equipped with more than 20 new play devices that all children can enjoy, especially children with developmental challenges (Source: Ekovjesnik ↗).
Vruljica Park – A Unique Green Oasis
Vruljica Park is one of Zadar’s most valuable green spaces. Its name comes from the freshwater springs (vrulje) that feed a stream, which never dries even in the hottest summers.
The stream flows into Vruljica Bay, and around it grows an impressive variety of plants; species that could not survive in Zadar’s typically dry climate. The park covers around 5 hectares, with pine groves, lush vegetation, and a children’s playground.
Throughout history, the park was shaped by many changes: stone banks, bridges, cypress trees, and restored walkways (Source: Nasadi ↗).
A Beloved Place for Locals and Tourists
Despite wars and urban development, Vruljica has remained a cherished place where locals relax, children play, and visitors escape the city heat.
Sitting on the grass, listening to the murmur of the Vruljica waters, I feel a sense of calm that transports me into another reality. Little ducks bathe in the stream, enjoying the attention of children, while the kids beg their parents for just five more minutes and another handful of food to share with the hungry beaks.
The Well Restaurant: Traditional Dalmatian Flavors in the Heart of Nature
A pleasant aroma drifts from The Well restaurant, located nearby. Thirty years ago, when I first visited the park as a child, a restaurant already stood here. Though the space has been redesigned and the owner has changed, the tradition of Dalmatian cuisine remains the main asset of this warm, family-run restaurant, captivating even the most demanding palates, especially visitors eager to discover traditional dishes.
Since my modest culinary knowledge and skills could never do justice to describing in detail the dishes whose aroma is now luring me inside, I invited the restaurant’s owner himself, Andrej Vrsaljko. He gladly opened the doors and revealed the many charms The Well restaurant offers its guests.
A Place Where You Feel at Home
Andrej Vrsaljko is an experienced manager who honed his skills during 16 years working on a cruise ship. With passion and dedication, he brought everything he learned back to Zadar, shaping a restaurant infused with a warm, welcoming atmosphere, sure to become one of the highlights of your visit.
“Our goal is to offer every guest not only delicious dishes but also a memorable experience and a sense of belonging to this place and Zadar itself. We achieve this through excellent service and attention to our guests, while the restaurant’s location provides the perfect escape from crowds and noise.”
The restaurant is pet-friendly, welcoming four-legged friends as well.
The Well: Signature Feature of the Restaurant
At the very heart of The Well restaurant stands a charming, authentic well, the inspiration behind the restaurant’s name. More than just a decorative element, this unique centerpiece is also a welcoming drinks corner, where guests can enjoy a wide selection of beverages. From handcrafted signature cocktails to refreshing non-alcoholic drinks, The Well offers the perfect spot to relax, socialize, and experience the true spirit of the restaurant.

Authentic Meat Dishes
served with rustic potatoes and arugula–almond salad
The Well restaurant offers a rich selection of traditional Dalmatian meat dishes, making it truly difficult to choose just one. On the menu you’ll find the essential Dalmatian pašticada (traditional beef stew in rich sauce), as well as something you simply have to experience and taste while in Dalmatia: homemade peka (traditional Dalmatian dish of meat and vegetables slow-cooked under a bell-like dome lid covered with embers).
This is one of the rarely few restaurants where you can order peka à la carte without prior reservation. For the full experience of Dalmatian meat preparation, at The Well you can also enjoy the view of the open grill. You can chat with the chef while he prepares the food, or soak up the spirit of Dalmatian tradition from the comfort of the lounge.

Fresh Seafood Specialties
Dalmatia is famous for its seafood, and at The Well restaurant Zadar the sea truly comes to your plate. From freshly grilled Adriatic fish and black risotto to scampi in buzara sauce and octopus prepared under the traditional peka (bell), every dish reflects the authentic flavors of the Mediterranean. The experience is rounded off with a carefully selected range of top-quality local wines, which your host will be glad to recommend to complement each dish.
The goat’s milk ice cream
Andrej proudly revealed something really special about this restaurant: The Well is the only restaurant in Croatia where you can eat the goat’s milk ice cream. It is an authentic gelato made following a traditional Italian recipe, with a silky-smooth texture, no preservatives, and pure goat’s milk!
It comes from the village of Jelićka, located between Prijedor and Banja Luka, from a farm Nana Kaas that lives in harmony with nature and produces top-quality dairy products and you can try all the premium flavors such as pistachio, hazelnut, strawberry and chocolate.
Breakfast at The Well
Breakfast at The Well restaurant is more than just a meal. It is a ritual that fuels you with energy to start your day to the fullest. Here, you don’t just eat: the gentle sound of the Vruljica stream, the laughter of children nearby, and the inviting aromas from the kitchen together create an unforgettable atmosphere.
