Meet the City

Umag is a coastal town in Istria. It is also the westernmost place in Croatia. Due to that, it is often called the Croatian door to Europe. It is famous for tourism, tennis tournament, agriculture, olive and wine growing. It´s history dates back to to Roman times. The old town is surrounded by the remains of its 13th to 18th century walls. Back in the days, Italians made up the majority of the population. Today, that figure is around 18%, but the town is still billingual. This picturesque town will give you more than you expect: amazing Mediterranean cuisine, beautiful sun and sea and an unforgettable holiday.

Umag is a city that offers various activities for various types of people. It has preserved the Medieval architecture which you can see in the city walls, Venetian villas, streets... Enjoy the views while walking through the Old Town. The oldest and the best preserved building is certainly the Museum of the City. It is located in the city centre and it´s housed in the 14th century Bishop´s Tower which was once used as a fortress to defend Umag from seafront attacks. Source: croatia.hr If you go a little bit outside of Umag, you can visit the oldest lighthouse in Croatia. It was built in 1818 and there is a legend about its construction. Metternich,an Austrian count, fell in love with a Croatian lady at a Viennese ball so he had this lighthouse built only for her. However, she got ill and never got to see it, so the count decided to never again visit the lighthouse.

You can find the church of the Assumption of Mary in the city centre, the Church of St. Roche right at the entrance of Umag´s old town, and the Parish Church of Annunciation on the town´s central square.
