UNESCO World Heritage
First of all, Diocletian's Palace has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1979. It is the ancient palace of the Roman emperor Diocletian who decided to build it in the bay of the peninsula at the turn of the 4th century AD. Palace was built only 5 km away from Salona, thecapital of the province of Dalmatia. The emperor's plan was to live in it after his abdication from the throne. He lived there until his death (316). 
Source: windrosailing.com Furthermore, it is especially interesting that this palace is also a place where people live. The palace stretches over about 30 000 square meters. It was built out of the stone brought from the island of Brač. Its appearance is reminiscent of a military camp-castrum. There are a total of 4 entrances to the palace: three from the mainland and one from the sea. So we have the four gates of the palace: the Golden Gate to the north (main entrance), the Silver Gate to the east, the Iron Gate to the west, and the Bronze Gate to the south. The two main vertical streets are called cardo and decumanus. Cardo led to the Peristil, an open space in front of the emperor's chambers. To his left is the emperor's mausoleum which is today's Cathedral of St. Duje.

The Visit
Firstly, the ticket price for the cathedral is around 20 KN, which is quite cheap. The decorative detail in front of the cathedral - the sphinx - was brought from Egypt. In May Split is celebrating a holiday, St. Dujam, the patron saint of the city. It is contradictory because the emperor Diocletian, a persecutor of Christians, had tortured and xecuted him in the amphitheater. On the right side of Peristil are three temples: Jupiter's, Cybele's, and Venus'. The whole palace was divided into two parts. The northern part was intended for service, army, warehouses, etc. The southern, more luxurious part was located above the basement of the palace leading to the Peristil and it was intended for the imperial family. The emperor's residence was entered through the protiron and the vestibule (main lobby).

Today, during the summer months, the vestibule and Peristil are used for musical events. Along the south side of the palace where the sea used to splash the walls is today’s city promenade Riva. To get from the Peristil to the Riva, you need to go through the main basement of the palace, and the passage is free of charge.
