8 Things to Avoid in Opatija for a Safe and Enjoyable Visit

Planning a trip to Opatija? Check out our guide on 6 things to avoid in Opatija to ensure a safe, enjoyable, and memorable visit.

Welcome to Opatija, a breathtaking coastal town that captures the hearts of thousands of visitors every year. While this picturesque destination is generally safe, it's always better to be prepared and avoid some common mistakes to make your trip enjoyable and free from unwanted incidents. Here are 8 things to avoid in Opatija (or simply be aware of):

Leaving Valuables in Your Car

As we said, Opatija is generally a safe destination, but petty theft can still happen. It's easy to get caught up in the excitement of exploring this gem and forget about safety precautions. But here's one must-respect rule: don't leave valuables in your rental car. That mistake could ruin your trip. Even if you park in a secure area, don't risk. Instead, leave your valuable belongings in your hotel or apartment. Or simply keep them with you, but also be careful, especially in crowded tourist areas where pickpocketing can occur. Don't let a stolen camera, phone or wallet ruin your whole day – keep your valuables safe and secure.

Walking Alone in Secluded Areas at Night

Opatija is a safe town to walk around, but it's always advisable to take some precautions, particularly if you're out at night. Don't walk alone in secluded or poorly lit areas. Instead, stick to well-trafficked and well-lit areas like the Lungomare. The Lungomare promenade is a wonderful seaside walkway that was commissioned by the Austrian Emperor Franz Joseph I. It spans a distance of 12 kilometers, connecting the towns of Volosko, Opatija, Ičići, Ika, and Lovran. Visitors who decide to take a walk along this breathtaking promenade should be mindful not to stray too far from their starting point to be able to return back easily.

Being Disrespectful to Locals and Their Customs

Croatians are generally warm and welcoming to visitors. However, make sure to respect their customs and way of life. Be mindful of your dress when visiting churches and other religious spots. Respect the local culture, and you'll find that the people of Opatija are friendly and willing to help.

Overpaying for Souvenirs and Other Items

As with any tourist destination, some vendors in Opatija may try to overcharge visitors for souvenirs and other items. Avoid getting ripped off by shopping around and compare prices before making a purchase. Remember that bargaining is an accepted practice in many markets (also known as “pijaca, pjaca or plac”) in Croatia, so don't be afraid to negotiate for the best deal. Also, keep in mind that vegetables and fruits at the Opatija market are often very expensive, so it's better to go to Rijeka - a 30-minute drive by car. Moreover, the shops near the sea or beaches tend to be more expensive than those located a few kilometers away from the shore. So for larger shopping trips, we advise avoiding stores at the beach and opting for ones further inland.

Not Carrying Cash

Credit cards are widely accepted in Opatija, but it's always a good idea to carry some cash with you, especially when visiting smaller shops and restaurants. Some places may not accept credit cards or may charge extra fees for their use, so having some cash on hand will make your transactions smoother and more straightforward.

Traffic Jams

During the summer months, many people head to the beaches near Medveja or Moščenićka Draga for a day of swimming and sunbathing. However, those who plan to leave the area around 5-6 pm may encounter heavy traffic on the road back to Opatija and Rijeka. It's not uncommon for the road to get congested as everyone makes their way back from the beach.

The Party Scene: Is It Worth Your Time?

While Opatija is not exactly a party destination, night owls can still find a few options to enjoy a night out. The town has a handful of cafes and a lone nightclub that can cater to those seeking some evening entertainment. Even though it may not be as lively as cities like Split or Zagreb, Opatija's nightlife scene has its own unique charm that's worth experiencing.

Being Careless on Hiking Trails

Opatija is surrounded by stunning hiking trails, including those in Učka Nature Park. But there are also some necessary precautions. For instance, ensure that you have enough water and snacks. Also, wear appropriate footwear - flip-flops are definitely not a good option. And lastly, return before dark, otherwise you could get lost on the trail. We also recommend to take an exploring tour with your friends or some organized group.
