Just 25km west from Zagreb, there is a beautiful picturesque town Samobor, most popular Zagreb weekend one-day destination for century. The best time to visit Samobor is during the Samobor Carnival, when town becomes the Carnival republic for more then two weeks. Samobor Carnival has a long standing tradition of respectable 190 years and it is one of the Croatian best known place for fun and laughter. For adults who often behave like children in days of carnival, best time to come is weekend night and last day of carnival. In those days, beside the official concert program on main square and carnival tent, absolute all bars in town are open all night until the morning.
We recommend Bar Gradna (Mlinska 3), local joint with great music and masked party people. For/with kids the best time to come to Samobor Carnival is saturday and sunday morning or early afternoon when they can watch and join costume parade, go to old school Luna Park, participate in best costume competition, watch children theatre shows and concerts, compete in traditional children orientation race or even see the Harry Potter Quidditcn competition (06.02./12:00h). Last day of Samobor Carnival, Shrove Tuesday – last day of unlimited food and drink before the 40 days of Lent period, big festival parade with masks that mocks current political situation in Croatia takes place on the streets.
After the parade doll of Prince Carnival is blamed for everything bad and burned on the main square. Plus big fireworks above. And while you are in Samobor you must try local gastro delights like kremšnita (custard slice), muštarda (grape mustard sauce) and bermet (dessert wine with fruit and herbs). So, from friday 29.01. all roads lead to Samobor streets where hundreds of masks rule the city with no law. Carnival Republic is in power!
When: 29.01. – 09.02.
