Castle Veliki Tabor is Medieval fortification, with towers built in 15th century as defense against the Turks. It is situated very near the capital city Zagreb, on a hill. When you watch it from a distance, it is really a breathtaking scene. Castle Veliki Tabor has been completely renovated during the past few years, and the interior is now a museum. If you like Medieval era, just visit the the tourist information office at Veliki Tabor because they organize workshops and exhibitions or special programs for kids. You may choose a tour around the castle and learn more about Veliki Tabor’s architecture. You’ll be thrilled to see some of the many legends related to the castle. Kids may attend puppet shows performed by a traveling theater. Both adults and their kids may learn more about archery. The tourist office organizes plenty of touristic facilities, so join in!
In the neighborhood, locals offer rural tourism on their family households. The most popular spot for a lunch break is called Gresne gorice (Sinful vineyards). There you may taste some wine and traditional (continental) cuisine. Prepare yourself for a lot of cheese and sour cream, poultry dishes and traditional apple cakes. Yummy!

If you’re situated in Zagreb, travel to castle Veliki Tabor by car or by bus. The trip takes only half an hour by car. The roads are good and not very crowded. Taxi service is available and train as well. The entrance fee is 10 kunas for kids and 20 for adults ($2 and $4). If you join the workshop, you’ll pay from 30 till 250 kunas, depending on the activity.
Visit Veliki Tabor throughout the year because the museum is open during each season, but come between April and October if you want to attend workshops and puppet shows in the castle. Bring the camera!
