Kroštuli is another Croatian festivity pastry noticeable by its shape and the obligatory ingredient, the homemade rakija (schnapps).
The simplified version includes the thinly rolled dough cut into strips and wrapped in the shape of a „fjok” (bow). The next step is to fry Kroštuli in hot oil and sprinkle them with powdered sugar. Sweet, crunchy dessert goes perfectly with a nice cup of coffee or a glass of white wine Muškat.
Ingredients for Kroštuli:

- rakija / grappa / schnapps
- raisins / uvetta / Rosinen
- butter or oil / burro o olio / Butter oder Öl
- yeast / lievito / Hefe
- lemon peel / scorza di limone / Zitronenschale
- salt / sale / Salz
Recipe for preparation: Kroštuli
Ingredients:
- 400 g flour
- 2 eggs
- 1 tablespoon of sugar
- 1 bag of vanilla sugar
- milk
- 0,3 dl schnapps (rakija)
- butter
- oil
- lemon peel
- a bit of salt
- powdered sugar
Preparation:
Put flour in a bowl, add salt, sugar, eggs, and schnapps (brandy or rum), and mix the ingredients into a smooth dough. Roll out the dough thinly with a rolling pin. Now, open the kitchen drawer and look for that pastry wheel that we often forget that we have. Cut out rectangles, or even better strips which are easier to tie into a knot. That's it. Pour the oil into a deep pan and heat it. Drop the tied-up kroštuli into the hot oil, wait for a few seconds, turn them lightly, wait for another few seconds, and when they look crunchy, take them out on the paper towel to absorb excess oil. When cooled, sprinkle with powdered sugar and enjoy.
